{"id":9280,"date":"2012-11-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-11-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/develop.presby.edu\/about\/2016\/03\/16\/students-prepare-for-national-competition\/"},"modified":"2016-03-16T16:29:16","modified_gmt":"2016-03-16T20:29:16","slug":"students-prepare-for-national-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pharmacy.presby.edu\/about\/2012\/11\/16\/students-prepare-for-national-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Prepare for National Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3526\" title=\"pcsp-national-competition\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/pcsp-national-competition-300x265.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" \/>Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy (PCSP) will be well represented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)\u00a0National Conference, which will be held on December 3-4 in Las Vegas.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Third-year pharmacy students Jennifer Carter and Alan Rusnak will compete with other teams from across the country in a clinical skills competition. The competition is very\u00a0involved, as participating students are challenged to perform at the highest levels in a\u00a0limited amount of time.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Each team receives an in-depth clinical patient case; in a two-hour period they are\u00a0required to evaluate the best medical management strategy for the patient. Their final\u00a0assessment and recommendation will be presented and judged in written form. Those\u00a0selected will then move on to the final stage of competition and deliver a verbal\u00a0presentation of their case assessment.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Carter and Rusnak earned the right to represent PCSP at the National Conference by\u00a0winning the school\u2019s competition, which was held on October 13th, and then representing\u00a0PCSP at the South Carolina competition held on October 25th. \u00a0Also recognized at the\u00a0state competition were Kelly Dye and Lyndsay Gormley, who placed second in the\u00a0school\u2019s competition.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\u201cThe purpose of the competition is to provide students with the opportunity to apply their\u00a0knowledge in a simulated patient case as they would in private practice,\u201d said Dr. Nancy\u00a0Goodbar, Faculty Advisor for the Presbyterian College Student Society of Health-SystemPharmacists (SSHP). \u00a0\u201cThis is a great chance for them to experience what it takes to be a\u00a0pharmacist.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>This is the second year of participation in the national competition for PCSP. Carter and\u00a0Rusnak represented the school last year, and while they did not place, their scores were\u00a0impressive.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\u201cWe are extremely proud of their performance last year and excited to have\u00a0them represent the school again this year,\u201d said Dr. Richard Stull, Dean of PCSP.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>PCSP will have a strong presence at the conference this year. \u00a0Four groups of students\u00a0will be presenting research posters highlighting their research projects. Also, the SSHP\u00a0was selected to showcase their \u201cThank a Preceptor\u201d project.
